چکیده

A climatology of wetlands has been derived at a low spatial resolution (0.258 3 0.258 equal-area grid) over a 15-yr period by combining visible and near-infrared satellite observations and passive and active microwaves. The objective of this study is to develop a downscaling technique able to retrieve wetland estimations at a higher spatial resolution (about 500 m). The proposed method uses an image-processing technique applied to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) information about the low and high wetland season. This method is tested over the densely vegetated basin of the Amazon. The downscaling results are satisfactory since they respect the spatial hydrological features of the SAR data and the temporal evolution of the low-resolution wetland estimates. A new long-term and high-resolution wetland dataset has been generated for 1993–2007 for theAmazon basin. This dataset represents a new and unprecedented source of information for climate and land surface modeling of the Amazon and for the definition of future hydrology-oriented satellite missions such as Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT).

Direct Geo-Rectification of Regional-Scale SAR Mosaics Using SRTM DEM Data

SAR mosaics are often not precisely geo-referenced because topographic distortions were not removed during the mosaicking process due to the lack of adequate digital elevation models (DEMs). The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) has recently provided high-resolution DEM data with nearly global coverage, and makes it possible to geo-rectify SAR mosaics. Though techniques are available for ...

Using the IHACRES model to investigate the impacts of changing climate on streamflow in a semi-arid basin in north-central Iran

Understanding the variations of streamflow of rivers is an important prerequisite for designing hydraulic structures as well as managing surface water resources in basins. An overview of the impact of climate change on the streamflow in the Hablehroud River, the main river of a semi-arid basin in north-central Iran, is provided. Using the LARS-WG statistical downscaling model, the outputs of Ha...

Assessment of Wetland Ecosystem Health in the Yangtze and Amazon River Basins

As “kidneys of the earth”, wetlands play an important role in ameliorating weather conditions, flood storage, and the control and reduction of environmental pollution. With the development of local economies, the wetlands in both the Amazon and Yangtze River Basins have been affected and threatened by human activities, such as urban expansion, reclamation of land from lakes, land degradation, a...

Downscaling of coarse-resolution radiometer brightness temperature by high-resolution radar backscatter

Given the importance of soil moisture for hydrological applications, such as weather and flood forecasting, passive microwave remote sensing is a promising approach for retrieving soil moisture due to its high sensitivity to near-surface soil moisture, applicability to all weather conditions, direct relationship with the soil dielectric constant, and reduced effects from vegetation and roughnes...

Detection of open water dynamics with ENVISAT ASAR in support of land surface modelling at high latitudes

Wetlands are generally accepted as being the largest but least well quantified single source of methane (CH4). The extent of wetland or inundation is a key factor controlling methane emissions, both in nature and in the parameterisations used in large-scale land surface and climate models. Satellite-derived datasets of wetland extent are available on the global scale, but the resolution is rath...
